The Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is launching a major IT infrastructure upgrade that will significantly enhance connectivity and digital learning across the campus. The impactful project focuses on expanding SIPI’s network compatibility and increasing bandwidth capacity to every building. The upgrade will deliver 10-gigabit-per-building connections, supporting SIPI’s mission to provide world-class educational technology and digital access to all students and staff.

SIPI’s IT team is coordinating the installation of new fiber optic lines and advanced telecommunications systems to improve speed, reliability, and overall connectivity. Improvements include 21,000 feet of new fiber, upgraded switching equipment, wireless and plug-in access points, and more.

The new infrastructure will support high-speed data flow, new telecommunication systems, and prepare the network for the growing number of devices on campus. SIPI students will also benefit from their own dedicated network, providing a more secure and responsive online experience. This upgrade extends to all campus buildings, many of which are separated by long distances, ensuring strong wired and wireless connections.

The project began in mid-2024. It included months of planning, a 5-day on-site survey, and a gap analysis conducted with support from the American Indian Higher Education Consortium and contractors. The installation process is planned to take 60 days, with any short-term disruptions in service to be coordinated through SIPI IT.

For students, this means faster and more reliable internet access in dorms, classrooms, and labs — making it easier to stream 4K content, join online courses, and complete digital assignments without interruption.

SIPI is proud to spearhead this transformative effort, and the team is coordinating closely with other tribal colleges and universities to share best practices and lessons learned. This milestone marks a collective achievement, a bold investment in access and tools empowering SIPI students’ futures.
